BSGN AgriFood - Market Analysis Questionnaire

BSGN Accelerator Sustainable Agriculture & Food is a sustainable commercialisation project of ESA that supports companies to use the special conditions in space to accelerate product developments that are of existential importance for mankind in the next 20 years.

The BSGN Accelerator Programme consists of three phases:

  • until Q2/2023 - selection of commercially significant projects that companies (also in consortia) can carry out in space (e.g. ISS) to develop products for application on Earth. Partial financing will be provided by the esa and external investors;
  • from Q3/2023, implementation of the selected projects in space and development of a project pipeline for companies from all esa member countries;
  • from 2025, expansion into a service platform for companies to enable independent product developments with the possibility of financing via a project fund from investor resources.

Sustainable agriculture and food is an important field that benefits greatly from the space phenomena of microgravity, the extreme conditions in space and the vantage point of the ISS. Research into plants and food in space can have a profound impact on production on Earth.

Development of new fertiliser, packaging material to increase shelf life and other products in this context are possible.

What are we looking for?

·       We are looking for project proposals in the field of Sustainable Agriculture & Food to develop products that contribute to solving the world's medium-term needs, e.g. development of crops or food that are resistant to climate change or can be produced in a climate-friendly way as well as new forms of cultivation (indoor farming, hydrophopic farming), new forms of fertiliser, packaging materials, etc.

·       We are looking for companies (start-ups and SMEs) that are already working on potential solutions and need help in implementing and/or financing their business case.

·       We are looking for supporters who would like to help drive the project forward and contribute to the development of the service platform.

·       We are looking for investors who want to invest in a project portfolio to economically develop or philanthropically promote products for humanity on earth.
